Information on Spiders from PSU, your pest control experts

Compared to Australia, most spider species in New Zealand are harmless. However, there are some potentially dangerous spiders that you may wish to eradicate from your home or business. Read on for a brief description of the species and a guide on how to minimise the chances of having them in your home or business.

Katipo (Latrodectus katipo)

Description: A small, venomous spider known for its distinctive red or white stripe.

Habitat: Found in coastal dunes and sandy areas.

Significance: Though venomous, bites are rare and usually not serious.

Note: these are a protected species, and a pest control expert should be contacted.

Black Widow Spider (Latrodectus hasselti)

Description: Similar to the Katipo, but less commonly encountered in New Zealand.

Danger: Known for its venomous bite, which can be serious but is rarely fatal.

Habitat: Typically found in undisturbed areas like woodpiles.

Note: whilst rare in New Zealand, there are recorded instances of these arriving in New Zealand due to imports of cars and other vehicles from Australia.

White-Tailed Spider (Lampona cylindrata)

Description: Recognizable by its long body and white tip on the abdomen.

Habitat: Commonly found in gardens and homes.

Significance: Predominantly preys on other spiders and insects.

Redback Spider (Latrodectus hasselti)

Description: Similar to the black widow; identified by a red stripe on its back.

Danger: Venomous, and bites can cause significant pain and illness.

Habitat: More common in Australia but occasionally found in New Zealand.

Note: whilst rare in New Zealand, there are recorded instances of these arriving in New Zealand due to imports of cars and other vehicles from Australia.

Spider infestation prevention tips

Maintain Cleanliness

Regular Cleaning: Vacuum and dust regularly to remove spider webs and egg sacs. Pay special attention to corners, under furniture, and in basements or garages.

Declutter: Minimize clutter, which provides hiding spots for spiders.

Seal Entry Points

Inspect for Cracks: Check for gaps around windows, doors, and foundations. Use caulk to seal any openings where spiders might enter.

Install Screens: Ensure windows and doors have fine mesh screens to keep spiders and insects out.

Control Outdoor Lighting

Use Yellow Bulbs: Outdoor lights attract insects, which in turn attract spiders. Use yellow or sodium vapor lights that are less attractive to insects.

Limit Lighting: Reduce the number of outdoor lights or use motion sensors to minimize unnecessary attraction.

Manage Outdoor Areas

Trim Vegetation: Keep gardens and shrubs well-trimmed to reduce hiding spots for spiders.

Remove Debris: Clear away piles of leaves, wood, or stones that can serve as nesting sites for spiders.
