Rodents

Information on rodents from PSU, your pest control experts

In New Zealand, rodents can become pests in homes and other buildings. The primary rodent pests are the Norway Rat and the Ship Rat. Here’s a closer look at these pests and some strategies for managing and preventing them:

Norway Rat

Also known as the Brown rat, Water rat, or Sewer rat. This species is larger and often found in urban areas. They can be quite adaptable and are known for their burrowing habits. These are more likely to infest basements, sewers, barns, farms, fields and live close to wetlands and sewers.

Ship Rat

Also known as the Black rat, Blue rat, Bush rat, House rat, or
Roof rat. This species is smaller and more agile. They tend to inhabit forests and rural areas but can also be found in cities. This variety of rats are skilled climbers and often nest in high places such as attics and roofs.

Rats and mice are associated with a number of health risks. They can carry diseases such as salmonella, leptosprirosis and infectious jaundice through their droppings and urine. They can also contaminate food and damage property including wiring, insulation and plumbing.

Field Mouse

Much smaller than rats, the Field Mouse often thrive in open habitats such as fields and meadows. However, in the winter they may appear in barns and near food storage. They can become pests for agricultural properties or businesses, as they can damage crops and contaminate stored food.

House Mouse

The House Mouse is often found in homes and agricultural areas. In particular, garages, basements, barns, sheds and fields. They can often be found nesting in walls, attics or other hidden areas. Not only do they pose the risk to health, but they can also damage property and contaminate food.

Seal any gaps or holes in buildings, especially around pipes, vents, and doors.

Maintain cleanliness

Keep areas clean and free of food scraps. Store food in airtight containers.

Regularly dispose of garbage and keep outdoor bins secure.

Maintain outdoors

Trim vegetation and keep landscaping tidy to reduce hiding spots.
